Snow Xue XIA joined the South China Morning Post (SCMP) in 2019. Prior to this, she produced documentary videos for Boston Channel 5 (Hearst Television) in the United States. She graduated with a Master’s in journalism from Boston University and a Bachelor's in finance from Kean University. With well-round skills of in-depth research, multimedia reporting (broadcast video, documentary, photography, data visualization, podcast), and especially, natural, articulate on-camera delivery in both English and Chinese. Xia strives to cover international stories and bridge the gap of misunderstanding between different cultures.

‘Landmines girls’ clear unexploded bombs left from the Vietnam War

An all-woman bomb disposal team scans and detonates unexploded ordnance from the Vietnam War, such as land mines, grenades and cluster bombs, hidden underneath the soil in north-central Vietnam. The old bombs, left behind by the US military in the 1970s, have claimed over 8500 lives in Quang Tri province. Medic and safety officer Nguyen Thi Ha Lan works for the project, Restoring the Environment and Neutralising the Effect of War, that aims to restore more than 60,000 hectares of agricultural land with explosives beneath.

China coronavirus: Hong Kong confirms first infection as Beijing officials warn disease could mutate and spread

Hong Kong confirmed its first infected case of a new coronavirus on January 22, 2020. The patient was a tourist from the Chinese mainland who arrived on a high-speed train and had been to Wuhan, the city in central China that is the epicentre of the outbreak. Chinese health authorities have also announced that the virus appears to be spreading mainly through respiratory transmission and is likely to mutate, which could increase risks of a wider epidemic. Wuhan, where the outbreak began, has stepped up measures to contain the infectious disease which has killed at least 9 people.
